Pre-Departure

¡Ya casi nos vamos! It's almost time! Our departure for Spain is right around the corner and I can just feel the excitement (or maybe that's just me 😉). Parents, I wanted to thank you for trusting Juan, Daniel, Damián, and myself with instructing and guiding your students throughout this summer. But most importantly, thank you for encouraging your children to pursue this great adventure. It won't be easy, but with your help and the guidance of the IUHPFL Honor Code, this promises to be a wonderful summer.

We instructors understand that there may be a lot of questions popping up, so we hope that this post serves to answer some of them. Also, there are multiple hyperlinks within the text to the websites referenced within the paragraph. Please take your time to read through the following and follow the links as you see fit.

Arrival at Indianapolis Airport

Please arrive at Indianapolis International Airport at 12:30 PM, Thursday, June 7th. Daniel, Juan, and myself will be there to help with flight Check-In, easily identifiable in our IUHPFL shirts. All students must be wearing their IUHPFL shirt.

Getting Through TSA/Security

Getting everyone through TSA can be a bit tedious. Everyone will have to take off their shoes, any metals, belts, and unload any electronics (which should just be the students' phones) before getting through. Because of this, it is recommended that students wear little to no accessories for the flight. For example, I'll be wearing a belt and a necklace, but that's it! If your accessories are plastic or any non-metal then that should be okay for getting through security. If you find yourself unsure about what you can/cannot take through security, the policy on carrying liquids (which is very specific for any liquids in a carry-on or backpack), or anything else, please click here

Flight Information

All students should have access to the flight information through the IUHPFL website. If you would like to stay up to date with the status of our flights, I strongly encourage you to download the United Airlines app onto your cellular devices, and from there input the information accordingly. You can set up notifications for our flights from there (take-off, landing, delays, etc.).

Weather and Packing

The weather in Oviedo promises to be overcast with a bit of rain this coming week. Please take this into consideration when packing. Click here to check out the weather in Oviedo. Parents, we have encouraged students since orientation to only bring a backpack and a large suitcase to check-in, and no carry-on's. This is done in order to ensure that there is sufficient space on the bus for our 6 hour trip from Madrid to Oviedo and also to ease our travels within the airports. Trust us with this 😊. I will just have my big suitcase, my backpack, and a cross-body purse. The following packing list is not exhaustive, but hopefully it will help!

BACKPACK
  • Passport
  • Passport Copy
  • Textbooks
  • Camera & charger
  • Phone (to be collected in the airport in Madrid)
SUITCASE
  • Raincoat
  • Jacket
  • Shoes
  • Shirts
  • Pants
  • One nicer outfit for when we visit the Asturian Parliament
  • Swimsuits
  • Toiletries
  • Sunscreen

Parent's Commitment to the Honor Code

I would like to finish this post by once again thanking the parents, but also with a quick but emphatic reminder that you play a HUGE role in your children's commitment to the IUHPFL Honor Code and te 8 Core Values of our program. If you haven't spoken to your child about it's importance, about creating goals for the summer, etc. we encourage you to do so. Again, we instructors are excited to guide and instruct your child in their language immersion in Oviedo.

Till Thursday,

The Instructor Team
