Week 3: ¡Que Viva Ovieu, que Ovieu Viva!
¡Hola Hola!
We have officially passed the halfway point of our summer!
We have three weeks left and, just like the first three, they’re going to zoom
on by.
Last week we topped it off with the celebration of the
Nativity of St. John and the Summer Solstice. Each year, the city of Oviedo
puts on a HUGE hoguera (bonfire) and
“show” in the center of the city that celebrates local Asturian mythology. The
students were in groups throughout the night with their host families and so it
was very much a time spent with the families for them.
Abbi wasn't ready for this one! |

Next week we have our community service trip to a retirement
home, where we are planning on giving a little sneak peak of our Farewell Show
to the residents. Here are photos of the theater group practicing their
sketches.
This week, it’s been evident that our students are finally seeming more comfortable and at home here. They’re all laughing and joking more and they’re making the effort to make friends with students whom they would normally have not contact with in the U.S. We also celebrated Charlotte’s 17th birthday! Hers is the first if many birthdays this summer, and birthday’s mean cake so we’re obviously looking forward to each and every one of them 😊.
We ended the day by going to the park and relaxing in the shade, playing cards, playing soccer...park things!
It’s safe to say thought that everyone’s favorite day of the
week this week was yesterday! Y’all, we went kayaking and it was so much fun!
No one’s kayak got flipped over (phew!), it was sun and smiles all around, and
some of us even got to jump from a bit higher point into the river. The water
was freezing, but the sun dried us off and we enjoyed a nice and relaxing time
before heading back to Oviedo.
Casey was VERY excited!

Till next time,
