Week 1: Covadonga & Cangas de Onís
Week 1 has been 100% a success!
The students are adjusting well to their new environment. Classes
are in full swing and students are already taking great strides in their
language abilities AND their cultural knowledge. This week we had our first
excursion to Covadonga and Cangas de Onís, both important sites in the history
of the Spanish reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. Covadonga is also home to
the first king of Asturias, Rey Don Pelayo. We also went on a tour of the city, pictures to follow!
This year, Covadonga celebrated a threefold anniversary of the
coronation of the Virgin of Covadonga, the creation of the Mountain of
Covadonga National Park, and the 13th anniversary of the origins of
the Kingdom of Asturias (https://www.turismoasturias.es/en/covadonga).
The students were shown into new nooks and crannies of the Basilica and the
museum that previous Oviedo teams have not seen (we were treated like kings!).
In Covadonga we visited the Basilica de la Real Virgen de
Covadonga, the Shrine to Our Lady of Covadonga, and the museum where we were
unfortunately not allowed to take photos of the beautiful artwork and jewels. In Cangas de Onís, we visited a museum that spoke of the history of the Battle of Covadonga and we took pictures at the Puente Romano. And speaking of photos, let’s get rolling 😊
