Santiago de Compostela!

What a fun trip! We just came back from our big excursion to Santiago de Compostela, a few hours west of Oviedo in the province of Galicia. Santiago is the final destination of the pilgrimage to visit St. James (well, mostly final - some pilgrims continue on to Finisterre, from finis terrae , or "land's end") and we are lucky to be so close to it. We left Oviedo yesterday (Thursday) morning at 10am and once we arrived we spent the day checking out the huge cathedral, nearby shops and cafes, parks, and the fantastic pilgrimage museum. The weather was great and I know the students have tons of great photos. It is a really beautiful city, especially the casco viejo , the old part of town near the big cathedral. I've got a few pictures below, but I know your students will have many more. Last night we had a group dinner and a couple of little surprises. I've got a lot of photos and some brief descriptions below, but I wanted to start by just saying thanks to all the US families who are reading this blog; thanks for allowing us the chance to share a few weeks with your students. Aline, Jessica, Juan and I have loved our time with this group. When the students head off to spend time with their host families, the four of us often reflect on the day and the most common theme is how much we enjoy being around them. They are so smart, funny, responsible, hard working, and friendly. Sometimes they are goofy (which is great!), and at other times they are serious critical thinkers who ask great questions and lead our class conversations in interesting and productive directions. Our Last Week: Oviedo > Segovia > Madrid > USA

Hola Hola! Although it may seem like a lifetime ago, it was only last week that we found ourselves saying goodbye to the host families who had shared their homes with our students for 6 weeks and on our way to our final IUHPFL Oviedo 2018 excursions in Segovia and Madrid. Let’s go in order: Wednesday morning started with our final goodbye’s between the students and their host families. Although sad, this is one of my favorite parts of the program, not because we’re leaving, but because it’s when the students realize how much they have gained, only because they have to say goodbye to it. They have gained life-long memories and relationships with their host families, immediate and extended, with their host brothers and sisters, and from these relationships they have grown.
