Leaving Oviedo, a quick trip to Segovia

*For special effect, please read the following post with the first video playing* Our looooooooooooooong journey has finally come to an end! *Cue the Asturian bagpipes* Where last year, we were met with hot, arid weather in Madrid, this year Central and Northern Spain have had an unusual cold and rainy season! The brown and dry landscapes were replaced by lots of green and lovely flowers. BUT, this green is not the green of Asturias 😉 . We crossed the mountains of Asturias during our last hour and a half stretch of our 5+ hour bus ride from Madrid. The mountains are breathtaking. Pictures always fail to capture their grandeur, but all the same, their beauty is evident. Exhausted students = awkward but funny sleeping positions ↔ Here we were in sight of the mountains! Santiago de Compostela!

What a fun trip! We just came back from our big excursion to Santiago de Compostela, a few hours west of Oviedo in the province of Galicia. Santiago is the final destination of the pilgrimage to visit St. James (well, mostly final - some pilgrims continue on to Finisterre, from finis terrae , or "land's end") and we are lucky to be so close to it. We left Oviedo yesterday (Thursday) morning at 10am and once we arrived we spent the day checking out the huge cathedral, nearby shops and cafes, parks, and the fantastic pilgrimage museum. The weather was great and I know the students have tons of great photos. It is a really beautiful city, especially the casco viejo , the old part of town near the big cathedral.
