Week 5 - Parliament and the Mayors Office


For our second to last week we took some time to visit both the Asturian Parliament and the local government of Oviedo.

Asturian Parliament

Spain is geographically divided into Autonomous Communities, then into provinces, then from there even more to what we know as counties. As Oviedo is the capital of the Autonomous Community of Asturias, we were invited to visit the place of Parliament. Here the students were taken on a short tour and learned more about how the Representatives perform their duties and the overall functions of the Parliament.






































Almost every year the president of the Junta General, Pedro Sanjurjo comes to say a few words to the students and welcome us and hear some prepared speeches from our students. This year Isabel, Caleb, Anya, and Sophia were chosen, and they did not disappoint! Unfortunately, this year the President Sanjurjo was withheld in a meeting and was unable to make it. However, we all the same shared the prepared speeches with our group. Here they are:







El Ayuntamiento de Oviedo

After our last day of classes, we finished up the week with a visit to the local government of Oviedo, El Ayuntamiento. Here the students were given another tour and were able to ask questions and make comments about the running of the local government, important issues, and talk about how amazing Oviedo is :)





















































 















This week we have our Farewell Show and some time in Madrid before heading back to the states. We're so close!

Aline, Jessica, Juan and I have loved our time with this group. When the students head off to spend time with their host families, the four of us often reflect on the day and the most common theme is how much we enjoy being around them. They are so smart, funny, responsible, hard working, and friendly. Sometimes they are goofy (which is great!), and at other times they are serious critical thinkers who ask great questions and lead our class conversations in interesting and productive directions. Madrid > Asturias > Oviedo

*For special effect, please read the following post with the first video playing* Our looooooooooooooong journey has finally come to an end! *Cue the Asturian bagpipes*                   Where last year, we were met with hot, arid weather in Madrid, this year Central and Northern Spain have had an unusual cold and rainy season! The brown and dry landscapes were replaced by lots of green and lovely flowers. BUT, this green is not the green of Asturias 😉 . We crossed the mountains of Asturias during our last hour and a half stretch of our 5+ hour bus ride from Madrid. The mountains are breathtaking. Santiago de Compostela!

What a fun trip! We just came back from our big excursion to Santiago de Compostela, a few hours west of Oviedo in the province of Galicia. Santiago is the final destination of the pilgrimage to visit St. James (well, mostly final - some pilgrims continue on to Finisterre, from finis terrae , or "land's end") and we are lucky to be so close to it. We left Oviedo yesterday (Thursday) morning at 10am and once we arrived we spent the day checking out the huge cathedral, nearby shops and cafes, parks, and the fantastic pilgrimage museum. The weather was great and I know the students have tons of great photos. It is a really beautiful city, especially the casco viejo , the old part of town near the big cathedral.
